Holiday History Arts Award Days at Maidstone Museum

Kids can bag themselves an Arts Award by taking part in the Summer 2022 Holiday History Days being held at Maidstone Museum.

Limited places are available for children between 7 and 11 who would like to try out different creative activities in a day packed with art and history inspired by the Museum’s fantastic collections.

Led by Maidstone Museum’s experienced Learning Team, the first Holiday History Arts Day features the Maidstone Gentleman Explorer – Julius Brenchley – and is being held on Monday 25 July, with the second day focusing on Costumes taking place on Monday 15 August. Both between 9.00am and 3.30pm.

Maidstone Borough Council Lead Member for Leisure and Arts – Cllr Claudine Russell said: “The arts and crafts days held at the Maidstone Museum are a great way for children to learn, have fun, be creative and claim an Arts Award at the same time. What a fantastic opportunity for kids to spend a day at the Museum with the Learning Team who are so knowledgeable.”

Arts Awards are a great opportunity for children and young people to learn more about the arts and artists, and to try out different art forms. They are moderated by Trinity College London. The Maidstone Museum Learning Team are trained to assess the Discover Arts Award. Once the History Arts Days are completed each child will receive an official Discover Arts Award Certificate from the college.

Free outdoor dance and drama workshops during August

Maidstone Borough Council (MBC) has teamed up with the Hazlitt Institute to offer ‘AMPFest’, free dance and drama workshops during the summer holidays for young people aged from six to 18 years old and it’s time to book a place now!

The workshops will be held in the wonderful open air Hermitage Millennium Amphitheatre by the river side between 2 and 10 August.

With a choice of eight different workshops on offer from pirate adventures to becoming a superhero for six to 11 year olds to improv and dancing sessions for 11 to 18 year olds.

Cllr Claudine Russell Maidstone Borough Council Lead Member for Leisure and Arts said: “We are delighted to offer these free workshops for children and young people during August, all you need to do is book your free place.”

These workshops are all part of growing MBC’s cultural and leisure offer to make Maidstone a Thriving Place which is one of MBC’s four priorities contained in its strategic priorities.

Claudine continues: “There are a number of workshops to choose from, youngsters can have a go at finding their inner clown or learn an Encanto dance routine, while the older ones can take part in a fun fusion of Romeo meets &Juliet dance workshop or learn the power to improvise amongst others.”

Here is a list of the workshops on offer:

Tues 2 August – 10am-12noon – Pirate adventure for 6-11 year olds

Join a pirate adventure, set sail on the HMS Hazlitt, meet mermaids and find treasure. A workshop that is all about using your imagination.

Tues 2 August – 1-3pm – Find your inner clown for 6-11 year olds

Find your inner clown, learn different circus skills and practice the art of clowning!

Thurs 4 August – 10am-12noon – Encanto dance for 6-11 year olds

Join this dance workshop and learn a routine to your favourite Encanto songs.

Thurs 4 August – 1-2pm for 6-11 year olds and 2-3pm for 11-18 year olds ‘Strictly by the river’

These well-loved ‘Strictly’ accessible dance classes are going on a trip to Maidstone amphitheatre!

Tues 9 August – 10am-12noon – improv workshop for 11-14 year olds

The power to improvise is the biggest skill an actor can have. Come and give improv a go, laugh with your friends and learn the hottest skill in the game.

Tues 9 August – 1-3pm – Superhero quest for 6-11 year olds

Superheroes we need your help. Come and join this fun filled workshop where you get to be the superheroes and save the day!

Wed 10 August – 10am-12noon – Romeo vs &Juliet dance for 11-14 year olds

What happens when the hit musical &Juliet meets the traditional Romeo and Juliet…this workshop, that’s what. A fun fusion dance workshop.

Wed 10 August – 1-3pm – Pantomime for 6-11 year olds

Join a panto award nominated choreographer for a sneak peek workshop where you will get to learn one of the dance routines from sleeping beauty this year!
